Valais is a bilingual Alpine canton where agriculture, mountain landscapes, and tourism are closely interconnected. With half of its population living in rural areas, the region combines strong agricultural traditions with innovation and research support.

Its agricultural profile includes cattle and small ruminant farming, extensive winegrowing, fruit and vegetable production in the plains, and a range of high-value PDO and PGI products such as Raclette cheese, dried meat, rye bread, wines, and saffron. Strong cantonal and federal support for research, organic farming, and local branding reinforces the region’s commitment to quality and sustainability.

At the same time, Valais faces environmental pressures including pesticide and nitrate pollution, as well as natural hazard risks such as avalanches, landslides, floods, and forest fires.

Troodos is a mountainous territory characterised by terraced landscapes, rich biodiversity, forests, rivers, and strong cultural heritage, including UNESCO-listed sites. With 126 communities and a predominantly ageing farming population, the region reflects both the resilience and vulnerability of Mediterranean mountain systems.

Agriculture is closely linked to territorial identity through traditional vineyards, orchards, small-scale artisanal production, and place-based branding. However, the area faces significant pressures, including land abandonment, wildfire risks, water scarcity, soil erosion, nitrate pollution, and increasing climate stress linked to rising temperatures and declining rainfall.

Through a participatory territorial approach, Troodos seeks to strengthen collaboration between farmers, residents, local authorities, and researchers to co-create solutions, enhance social cohesion, and support the agroecological transition.

Lazio is a highly diverse agricultural region where agroecology is being integrated into land governance processes by linking biophysical indicators with the 10 Elements of Agroecology. The region encompasses multiple agroecosystems — from dairy cattle areas and kiwi production zones to vineyards, olive groves, and extensive cropping systems — reflecting strong territorial specialisation and multifunctionality.

Agricultural land is dominated by arable crops and meadows and pastures, alongside significant olive, horticultural, nut, and vineyard production. At the same time, Lazio faces important environmental pressures, including nitrates in vulnerable zones, soil pollution, saline water intrusion, land abandonment, landslide risks, methane emissions, and soil erosion.

Saxony-Anhalt is a predominantly rural region with over 2.18 million inhabitants and a strong agricultural identity.
